According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Brig-Gen. Johnson’s appointment
takes effect from the 23rd of December, 2013. He replaces the former,
Brigadier General NT Okore Afia.
The NYSC scheme was introduced in 1973.
The Federal Government on Tuesday announced the appointment of
Johnson Olawumi as the new Director-General of the National Youth
Service Corps, NYSC.
Who is Johnson Olawumi?
Brig-Gen. Olawumi, hails from Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State south western
Nigeria, (This is good news for all the corps members serving in Ekiti state, well, i served there too). He started his military career at the Nigerian Defence Academy,
Kaduna, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics.
He was commissioned into the Nigerian Army on September 23, 1989.
Mr Johnson also has another Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical
Engineering from the University of Florin as well as a master’s degree
in Defence Studies from the Kings College, London.
He’s happily married with children.
The NYSC scheme was created in a bid to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil War.
ohnson Olawumi, has said fairness, justice and equality would form the pillar of his leadership.
Olawumi made the promise on Monday, while officially taking over the
mantle of leadership from the former Director-General of the scheme,
Brigadier-General Nnamdi Okore-Affia, in Abuja.He also promised to take the welfare of the staff as major priority, while warning against laxity.
“I promise to be open and fair and, in my tenure, there will be equity. Whatever you are due to get, you will get it,” he promised.
In his valedictory speech, the outgoing DG, Brigadier-General Okore-Affia, said “NYSC, in the past 40 years, has impacted positively on the various sectors of our national life.
“It has been able to complement the manpower needs of the nation at the local, state and national levels, especially in the areas of education, health care delivery, agriculture and mentorship of youths for future leadership roles, among others.”
He said during his tenure, he was able to achieve successful implementation of the approved expanded administrative structure of the scheme and enhancement of the security of corps members in all locations throughout the country.
Including e-registration of foreign trained graduates and comprehensive review of conditions of service for the scheme as part of his achievements, Okore-Affia noted that the achievements would not have been possible without the cooperation of workers.
He expressed the belief that Olawumi led-leadership would re-mould the scheme for a greater efficiency, while calling on staff to lend him their support.
In his own words, Mr Olawumi said that he will be fair to all corps
members. Sincerely, i see a huge development and growth around the NYSC
scheme and hopefully, this will directly or indirectly affect the nation
positively.
